Bald Cypress

Question
Hi Rick,
I know Bald Cypress isn't a conifer but maybe you can help anyway. Twenty years ago we were given two of these trees to landscape around an in-ground pool. We were told that their root systems grow straight down and they wouldn't interfere with the pool. That info couldn't be farther from the truth. The roots have grown against the pool and we have to have one side reconstructed. My question is if we cut the roots of the tree on the pool side will it kill the trees. We plan on putting a metal barrier on that side so the roots can't get through. We don't want to cut the trees and don't want to get rid of the pool. Sorry this question is so long but I didn't know how else to put it. Sure hope you can tell us what to do!! Thanks.

Answer
they are deciduous conifers (cone bearers). it could kill the tree if it is large and you remove numerous large roots. there are new geotextiles (man made spun/woven materials) available to prevent root growth towards certain areas. i would remove the trees vs. removing the pool. i think you should call 2-3 arborist (professional tree services) to get their opinions before proceeding. ask for a price to remove them. ask if they can be root pruned and saved. if in doubt remove them.
