Peach Trees in the Philippines?

Question
My girl friends family has a farm in the Philippines and when I brought them peaches they had never heard of them before, but loved them. I was wondering what kind of restrictions a peach tree would have to growing in their tropical climate... does the peach tree require winter every year in order to bloom the next year, or is it just as a seedling that it needs the cold to germinate? Any insights would be appreciated, thank you.

Answer
Hi Chad,
Thanx for your question.  To my knowledge, peaches have a chill requirement that you're not going to find in the Philippines.  The tree needs to go dormant for about 60-90 days in order to re-energize for the next season otherwise, I believe they will wear themselves out over several years and die.  The chill requirement is also necessary for blossoming and fruit set.  You can check with Agriculture Canada on that.

Here is a link.

You can also go back to Home/Garden and click on Gardening and then Click on Fruit.  We have two experts there who can either substantiate what I am advising you or maybe they know something I don't.

I hoep this helps.
Tom
