Night blooming jasmine bushes

Question
Dear Viktoria,
Thank you for you prompt reply. itis appreciated.  I live in Westmister CA, next to Huntington Beach CA.  If he prunes off just the flowers will this keep it from generating the jasimne aroma causing me allergy problems.  he said he will do this as often as he can.  he said he did not want to take out the bush, but was willing to proon the flowers when he could.  Which meant he wanted the bush not the blooming flowers.

As for an air conditioner, for eight years I had a portable room A/C that gave me a boy in the bubble room and complete relief.  Then it got damaged by sears during repair.  I have spend many months trying to get the right machine that will meet my needs.  Between machines shipped in transit that arrived damaged, and machines that did not provide a tight seal, It has been a tough allergy period.  I think I found the right machine, it just needs to be installed during the day to make sure that there are no air leaks.

Thanks for your help,
God Bless,
Don Crosby Jr.

Hi,
I am an allergy sufferer, and recently found out that the Night Blooming Jasmine Bush behind us is casuing me major allergy problems at various parts of the day.  I spoke with the neighbor today and he has lived there since 1981 when the bush was there already.  So he has not desire to take it out.  He said that he will try to trim the flowers from the bush from time to time when he can.  I want to be a good neighbor, but I have lived here since 1967 and my health is important to me.  Will his trimming of the flowers do anything to get rid of the pollen.  You can smell the aroma from the drive way in front of my home.  Do you have any ideas what can be done to keep the 30 plus year old budh and rid it of the ffending pollen and arome.  Your help is greatly appreciated.
God Bless,
Don Crosby jr.

I am an allergy sufferer myself, so I can sympathize with you.

What is the point of having the shrub if one cuts off the blossoms?  It sounds like your neighbor is trying to accommodate you, but she would have to cut the shrub back often enough to keep it from blooming at all.  The permanent solution would be to remove the shrub altogether, and she is under no obligation at all to do that.  Even if she did, what guarantee would you have that another neighbor would not plant one?

An air conditioner would keep the air inside the house free of allergens.  You do not state where you live, but if jasmine is hardy there, you probably could use one anyway.

Answer
An alternate solution might be to offer to buy your neighbor a non-blooming shrub to plant in place of the jasmine (since he does not care about the flowers of fragrance), and he wouldn't have to be frequently pruning it.

Last year my husband purchased a Sharper Image ionic air cleaner to run in our bedroom, and since then I have had no nighttime allergy attacks.  A product like that might be helpful to you, too.
