leaves and berries on night blooming jasmine

Question
I have potted night bloming jasmine plants.  During the summer, the plants are outside and thrive. I live in St. Louis, so I brought them in for the winter.  Both plants have little spherical 'berries' that start green and turn white.  Will these berries bloom? My sister, who gave me the plants, said she has never seen berries before.  Also, the tips of some leaves are  yelowish brown which continues up both sides of the leaf.  Not all leaves look like this, but many do.  I don't see any bugs.  Could this be a lack of nutrients, or is it some disease?  Thank you for any help and information you can give me.
Sincerely,
Gloria in St. Louis

Answer
Dear Gloria, Before I answered your question, I went outside to look at my night blooming jasmine.  I live in North Texas, which is warmer than where you are, but still pretty cold during the winter.  I also have to bring the plant inside during a severe freeze, or for a light freeze (around freezing at night but somewhat warmer during the day) I will cover the plant with a sheet.  However, the plant still knows it's winter, and a lot of the leaves turn lighter or go brown on the edges.  This is actually normal, and the best thing to do is to give it as much light as possible.  If it is inside, I would provide it with a grow light kept on for about 12 to 14 hours a day.  It is just going a bit dormant right now and should perk up nicely in the spring.  You can fertilize it, but do so very lightly until the new growth starts in the spring.  Then it is safe to prune it, shape it, and give it a good feeding.  Also, my plant also has berries which really tickles me.  These berries are the result of pollinated flowers and I am assuming that when they are fully mature, and are ready to fall off, these may be saved and planted separately to grow new plants.  I can't wait to plant mine, but will have to wait until March or April.  It sounds like you are doing everything right, so just be patient while it is resting as it will definitely lose more leaves before it starts growing new ones.  This is one of my favorite plants because the fragrance is so intoxicating.  Be sure to let me know if it doesn't get better when the temperature warms up but I suspect it will.  Good luck and Happy Holidays!  Melissa
