crepe myrtles

Question
MY CREPE MYRTLES BEGAN TO PRODUCES LEAVES LAST WEEK.  We had 4 nights of frost.  Eight of the ten crepe myrtles show dead leaves and only a few have some branches with live leaves.  When I break the branch I see green.  I live in North Carolina.  Will they drop the dead leaves and reproduce new leaves or are they totally gone.

Answer
Linda, Indications are that your myrtles were cold shocked and defoliated; I am confident that they will come back for you (as long as you didn't have a freeze), patience is the game here and keep checking the cambium layer to ensure that it is still showing green. Refrain from watering and allow nature to take its course, you should see new growth within a month or so; too often people give up on plants when they are cold shocked, just a little patience and before you know it, they are happy again (albeit not always); so play the waiting game and very sparingly (when ground is real dry) irrigate them...good luck Nick
