Honeysuckle disease

Question
My Honeysuckle has been destroyed.I found hundreds of little silvery balls(presumably eggs)all over the flowers and leaves, and tiny catterpillar-like grubs, each wrapped in a leaf. Some of these creatures were green, some white. Can you advise me,please

Answer
Hi Kay:
From your description, sounds like a critter rather than a plant disease.  The first step in dealing with these insects is to get a correct ID on them. You can collect a few of these flowers/leaves (with critters on them) in a small plastic bag and carry to your local nursery/greenhouse to get an idea of what they are.  Many caterpillars are leaf feeders and once they feed for awhile and change into a moth or butterfly, they move on- so the damage is usually temporary.  There are several insecticides available to control them if this is desired.  One example is a product call Dipel.  It is a bacterial preparation used for a wide range of caterpillars.  Another related product is Thuricide. Again, best to get the critters ID's correctly first, before you purchase some chemical, because the damage that they cause may be insignificant.  They are many predatory insects out there that keep the "bad guys" under control. If the number of affected leaves are small enough, you also have the option to hand pick those affected leaves and dispose of as well.

Steve
