sago palm care

Question
I thought I read a lot about the palm when I got it and somehow thought it said they could live in very cold weather, I left it out this winter and it was very green until it went down to 11 degrees the other night, now my baby is almost all yellow. please tell me it is not dead or what can I do to save it!

Answer
Hi Cindy, the cold tolerance limit for both the King and Queen Sagos is 20 degrees, 11 degrees is too low for it and it is showing it with the yellowing fronds; even if it only dropped to 20 degrees, you must harden any plant before you subject it to extreme temperature drops. If it is contained, and the soil isn't frozen, then bring it back in and hopefully the root ball hasn't frozen and been compromised. Cut away the yellowed fronds and if it is ok, you will eventually see new growth from the top of the cone. Nick
