dying christmas (adonidia) palms

Question
Nick, our s.pasadena condo has 30 triple adonidia clumps throughout the complex...all show killing cold damage. what can we substitute with a similar appearance and growth? (NOT areca or travelers).this may be a major battle with our Directors, so needs to be of better cold tolerance.we're desperate, please help.

Answer
Hi Sally, all across the south, the plea has been the same, the Christmas Palms have been decimated by the extreme winter we had; Adonidia is very susceptible to cold and the accepted substitute is the Foxtail , which is similiar in appearance and size, but more tolerant to cold. Here in South Florida, I have seen extensive damage to the Christmas Palms, but the Foxtails seem to have recovered, albeit stressed also. Bottom line, I would recomend the Foxtail....:)
