Are our palms dead

Question
We live in Portland OR., and this past winter, we had a lot of snow, which is very
unusual for us, and the snow stuck around for several week. All 3 of our palms
are losing, or has lost all its leaves, and are very soft at the top of the tree trunk.
Being from California, I have never dealt with snow or had problems with snow.

Answer
Hi John, Palms in Portland OR?? I am curious what type they are, please follow up and let me know of the type, for most Palms are at least semi-tropical and growing up there is questionable; but to answer your question, if the fronds (leaves?) are falling off and the top of the crown (tree trunk?) is very soft, then it sounds like a crown rot has set in and this is a sure sign of demise. Tug at the crown, if it holds firm, then it has a chance (albeit small one), but if it just pulls out or severs just below the crown, then it is dead. Nick
