Tree dying?

Question
Hi there, my husband and I just did an addition on to our house, but wanted to keep all of our mature trees on the property.  We have a large Ash(?) tree that part of the roots had to be cut through to dig the hole for our foundation (our new addition is less than 10 feet from the tree).  The tree got leaves like normal during the spring, but has since starting dropping it's seed pods(?) like crazy and alot of the leaves are curling up and looking droopy.  What if anything can we do to save our tree?

Answer
The root system was reduced by the cutting of the roots and the tree is responding by dropping some of its foliage. The roots that are left can not support the amount of foliage the complete root system once could so the foliage is reduced. Increase in seed pods is a reaction from the stress of the root cutting.
I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. Do this now and again in the Fall and spring. I would also water the tree with 1 inch water per week-place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch if water in it stop. This will give the remaining roots plenty of water to offset the root loss.
