beaver damage

Question
A large beaver had a meal on my willow tree.  It only has one small section that has bark still on it.  I have put up a wire mesh around the tree to prevent any more damage until the beaver can be caught.   But............will my willow tree die.  Will the back go back. Is there something i can put on it to restore it's shape

Answer
There is nothing that you can put on the bark that will help the wound. "will my willow die" depends on the amount of damage --if the beaver girdled all the way around the trunk then the tree has very little chance-but I would expect the beaver left some bark since this is a source of food for him and he did not want to kill the tree. All you really can do is protect it from further danage and wait and see. Sorry!
