watering transplanted trees

Question
I have recently had several crimson king maples and blue spruces transplanted. Should I continue to water them now that the weather has changed and there is snow on the ground?

I don't want to put water around that open root ball that will freeze. I did mulch them heavily.

Thank you,
Jo Oland
Marshall, MI

Answer
No do not water during the winter when the ground is frozen. This can freeze the root system. Next spring and summer water only when it does not rain for a couple of weeks or more. Make sure you mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold moisture around the roots.
