pruning a dogwood tree

Question
I have pruned my dogwood tree previously, now it has a bunch of small sprouts all over the branches--they look about like suckers, except they are on the branches.  What can I do to make the tree look normal again?

Answer
Well there is not a real good way of saying this--dogwood trees do not need pruning except maybe removing lower limbs that interfere with going under the tree. One should not prune back the limbs or the new growth will look like a bottle brush with the sprouts. Now about all that can be done is let the tree grow out like you would a bad hair cut. Over time the branches will stop sprouting new growth except at the ends of the branch. They will sort themselves out on their own. I would do nothing and let it grow out. Sorry.
