leaking? dogwood

Question

leaking dogwood
I have never seen this before.  We have a mature dogwood tree that seems to be leaking liquid from a spot about the size of a dime near a branch.  The liquid is a milky white but as it travels down the trunk is clear.  It feels like water, not sticky, no odor and the tree looks healthy with lots of buds.  The trunk looks wet where the liquid travels.

Answer
My first thought was slime flux and bacteria disease that causes the sap to flow down a trunk but since you said it had no odor it is more than likely not slime flux. I would lean toward a borer that has entered the bark and trunk and the tree is producing sap flow to try to drown out the insect. Borers attack a tree usually near limbs that have been pruned off. I would spray the trunk area with an insecticide called Merit or Onyx OR check with your local garden type store for an insecticide for tree borers. This will kill the insect under the bark and the flow should stop.
