Question
Why would leaves fall from our freshly pruned mature maples? We did cut back quite a few branches. Are the trees in shock? Should we be worried?

IF you cut the ends of the branch off this is the growing part of the branch and this will cause stress to the tree. IF the entire branches were cut off to the trunk this should not have caused any problem with the foliage. Some folks use a fertilizer for lawns under trees called Weed and Feed--this contains a herbicide that will cause trees to drop their leaves. Beyond that without further details I can not determine a cause.
