Dry Leaves on Canadian Reds

Question
We have several Canadian Red Chokecherry Tree in our yard that have been there for 2 or more years.   This year we have had very dry winds and now on 2 of the trees all of the leaves have dried out.   The trees on both sides of these trees are fine.   This year we also put in a sprinkler system and sod around the trees which is watering them twice a day for 30 min.   The interesting part is on the ends of the branches even though the leaves are dry there is green growth.  Is there anything we can do to prevent the leaves from drying out.

Answer
These trees are in the Rose family. This means that they are very susceptible to fungal diseases, both foliar and rootzone. The watering schedule that you mention is too frequent and can cause fungal issues. That the trees have defoliated is a sign of too much water and the trees could either be smothered in water logged soil or have succumbed to a fungal disease. I would try drying the area out and resume less frequent watering. Trees will often cast leaves during stress and refoliate. Let's hope this is the case.

Unfortunately, sod and trees do not get along very well. It may be difficult to please one and not the other.
