Barberry die back

Question
I live in rural (western) NJ and have two red/variegated barberry shrubs (about 10 years old). Both were doing well, now one has extreme die back in several places.  There is irregular light brown spotting (some holes) on some of the leaves but nothing consistent or drastic. There is no sign of pests. At this point, there are spots that are totally stripped to stalks (no leaves) and I can see through to the center in several spots. It is so pronounced I wondered if it might even be deer?
Any ideas?

Answer
Diane,

While deer browsing may be a cuase for the die back, I am not sure this is the main problem. There are several leaf blights and aome environmental issues that could also be to blame. I would recommend calling a local tree care company to visually inspect the plants for a positive diagnosis.

Good luck,
