Tagetes

Question
Hi!
I recently put an image on Tramil website of what i thought was Tagetes lucida. however it appears that it is not. The bright yellow flowers are on long pedicels and single. However the leaves are simple and the flavour is aniseedy and good in food.Do you know of another Tagetes species?
Thanks
roger

Answer
Roger:
There are a few more tagetes. The lucida is called texas tarragon, winter tarragon, mexican mint marigold and about 30 other names. It is used as a substitute for french tarragon.
It has a better flavor than the french, but can be over powering. There is also 1 from Peru called Peruvian marigold, black peruvian mint. It is tagetes minuta L. Seeds are very hard to find here. A delicious pesto sauce is made from it. Below are the other species that I have grown.

tagetes filifolia

tagetes minuta

tagetes erecta

There are more, but these are the only ones that I am familiar with.
