Climbing Rose Bush not Flowering

Question
We have a climbing rose bush that has stopped flowering.  It was a burgundy color flower when is was flowering.  In the last several years it has stopped.  We tried fertilizer, Miracle grow and someone even suggested planting iron nails to add iron to the soil.  The plant is on the south side of our House.  We live in the Buffalo,NY area and we do have clay in the soil.  The bush grows extremely well but no flowers.

Answer
Climbing roses have great vigour but when they use that vigour to make new growth, quite often it is at the expense of making flowers. You are being too kind to the rose when you give it lots of fertilizer as this mainly promotes growth not flowers even though the package says it does. I would stop all fertilizing and only give the rose water. Plus placing any kind of mulch all around the base of a rose when it is close to a house wall, will make the roots cool and roses love to have their roots cool. Also don't prune it as this also encourages new growth. Next year you can then give it a fertilizer with very low nitrogen in it as nitrogen really encourages new growth. It is like an electric prod! You don't have to use a rose fertilizer  which is usually a lot more expensive than any other fertilizers, just use one that has a high middle number as this will be potassium, the mineral that is used to encourage making flowers. Miracle Gro is a good one, but it  tends to make roses put on new growth and this isn't what you want right now. There is nothing the matter with your climber it is only interested in growing not flowering.Hope this helps.
