Rose Not Flowering

Question
Hi.  I live in Zone 13.  I have an older Floribunda ( I believe) bush, planted by the previous owner.  Five years ago, the plant produced approx. 10 blooms.  Last year, I  got one.  The plant doesn't even produce the start of bud.  Just leaves.  I fertilize with Miracle Gro for roses, and their Bloom Booster.  What is the problem?  And what fertilizer would you suggest?  There are no known insect infestations.
 Thank you.

Answer
As you have said, your rose is an old one. Old roses can slowly decline and need to be perked up with hard pruning. Also, sometimes giving a rose bush a lot of fertilizer will only encourage green growth which takes energy and there is not much left over for blooming which also takes a lot of energy. Because i can't see the bush, I am assuming that there is no physical problem with it such as canker or a root problem. Nematodes are the main problem if you are gardening in Florida. But I would still check just to make sure there are no lumps on the canes as cankers will cause what you describe. Then cut the rose bush right back to about 12 inches just cut straight across the whole plant. Then cut to the base, any very thin, twiggy canes.  Leave about 5 main canes as that is all a rose bush will need to grow well. Next spring don't give the rose any fertilizer especially Bloom Booster. Place a mulch of anything you can get in your area all around the base of the rose. Water well when it starts to put out new growth. Many rose growers like Miracle Gro and say they get good results with it but don't use it until the rose is putting out flowers next summer.
