climbing rose not climbing?

Question
Hi -- I have a Zepherine Drouhin that is starting it's 2nd season and it always starts to grow from the bottom with new shoots. I would expect for growth to start on some of the old canes as well, otherwise it will never climb and cover my arbor. I'm really confused b/c I know this is supposed to be one of the best climbers. Thanks for any advice you have for me!

Answer
Zepherine Drouhin can be slow in starting to climb but once it gets going it will do well for you. Most climbers usually take at lease 5 years to grow to the height they are supposed to. I wouldn't give up on Zepphy yet. This is a rose that really likes cool roots so any type of mulch spread all around the base will help to make new growth. Hope this helps.
