climbing rose

Question
half of my climbing rose bush has full foliage and the other half has only started to show green.  It appears the one half of the bushes growth is stunted.  Would you have an idea as to why this is.

Thank-you

Pat

Answer
Your climber probably has a rose gall somewhere on it. A rose gall is a wound on the cane that bacteria have got into and made it swell so it looks like a small ball. They can even be the size of a golf ball. Rose galls can be at the base of the canes right up to near the top but not on new growth. The other explanation for the problem could be that the roots are damaged, especially if you have mice, rabbits or squirrels. Check the rose carefully and look for a ball the same colour as the old growth which would be a brown colour. Cut it off even if you have to cut the whole cane off as it will grow bigger.
