Rose Bushes and Mulch

Question
I was recently told not to mulch around rose bushes as it will kill them. Is this true?

Thank you

Answer
What the advice may have been -- I think -- was that you should not 'cultivate' around Rose Bushes.  Mulch is GREAT for Roses -- but scratching the soil too deep will injure them.  It would be hard to kill a Rosebush that way, but it would be better to leave them alone rather than break up the delicate roots underground.

All kinds of Mulches are terrific for a Rose.  They hold in moisture, build up the soil, shield from Weeds, and they look nice.  What's not to like?
