digging rose bushes

Question
i need to dig up rose bushes and want to know how to keep them from dying til i re plant them again

Answer
The best time to transplant in your area in when the temperature is the coolest.  That means try and do it as soon as can if that is possible in your area. I am assuming here that these roses are mature and so have a lot of growth on them. What causes problems with transplanting is often the roses having to sit around for some time before getting into the ground and this will start the roots dying. Water the roses very well the day before
Next day cut them back to 18 inches tall. Try and dig up as much of the top of the roots as possible. The deep one are mainly anchors. You can't help but damaged the frail feeder roots but many are near the top so that makes it a little easier to save them.
Place each rose in a black garbage bag that has wet newspaper in it. Tie it tight over the top of the rose if you can. Re-plant as soon as possible. If the roses have to sit around for some time, then place them in an area that is cool and dark to stop them from activating into growth.
If they have to be out of the ground for say about a month or so, then they should be potted up. That way they can stay in the pots for the whole summer if need be. If you haven't got any pots, then just use the black plastic bags doubled. Fill them up with soil and plant a rose in them. Turn the top down and tie the bag loosely just above the soil line.
