Roses (Northern California-Sacramento)

Question
Hi Lynnette:   I would like to have some roses in our garden.  We live in Lincoln, CA which is just 30 northwest of Sacramento.

I looked up a number of plants that I thought might be nice but I want to grow the roses in containers.  Can you tell me if any of the following would grow suitably in pots?

These are all roses I found on the "Weeks Roses" website:
Julia Child, Marilyn Monroe Strike it Rich, Outta the Blue and Sky's the Limit.  These are all listed as disease resistant.

Can you help me with this as I don't have the space in the ground and would like to have a couple of plants in pots.

Thanks very much.
Lynn

Answer
Large roses such as hybrid teas don't always do well in containers. Because rose roots need 18 inches in depth, the container should be at least that depth.  Julia Child is a medium bush, so is Outta The Blue. Marilyn Monroe can get big but all you do it prune it back hard in the spring. Marilyn Monroe also tends to bleach out to a very washed out peachy white in the full sun so try to find a spot that doesn't get full afternoon sunshine. In regards to Sky's The Limit. This is a rose that you can use as a climber as it will get to 6 feet if happy. A rule of thumb is that any rose that doesn't grow above 3 feet will be okay for a container. Many nice floribundas fall into that category. Hope this helps.Hope this helps.
