Hubiscus Leaves

Question
I'm growing a hardy hibiscus in a pot. The leaves are being eaten by an unknown pest. They look like a piece of Swiss cheese with small holes all over it. There are also some places where whatever it is didnt eat all the way thru but are transparent.  What is this?

Answer
Hi Tim,
Thanx for your question.  The pest could include a number of insects such as spider mites, slugs who knows.  Just use a general insecticide approved for flowering plants.  This is available at Walmart or one of the big hardware stores.  Ortho makes a complete line of insecticides for the garden.  I really can't tell you exactly what kind of pest it is without seeing a picture.  Leaf miners leave transparent trails but you would see these as patterns of lines like a highway road map.  Aphids suck the fluids out of the plant but usually a whole section of the leaf will wilt.  Small pests like spider mites can have a Swiss cheese effect.
Tom
