star lilly (outdoor)

Question
I have an outdoor star lilly and the flowers have dropped off leaving tall stalks and leaves.  What do I do.  Cut the stalks down or just leave them.  I was under the impression they would keep flowering until late summer.

Answer
Hi Lynn,
Thanx for your question.  Once lilies like this bloom, that's it...a one time thing.  So, you can deadhead or snip of the spent plant but allow the stem and leaves to turn yellow so they can continue to gather energy from the sun which will be converted to starches and stored in the bulb for next year's growth and bloom.  When the leaves and stalk begin to turn, then you can cut it back.  I hope this helps.
Tom
