Hi Paul,

This is a type of Dracena (warneckii).  Where ever you cut on the stem (you can prune it back 1/2 to 2/3), the plant will make sideshoots.  The pieces you cut can be rooted in soil, or preferably sand, as it holds less bacteria, and stays uniformly moist.  If you only want the one plant, but shorter and more compact, go with pruning rather than trying to salvage the top cuttings.  I am attaching before and after photos showing how the plant responds to pruning.  Go easy on the fertilizer, as salt tends to build up and brown the tips of the leaves.  Hope this helps.
