stella doro and asiaitic lily

Question -
I have a stella d'oro that is about 3 years old. It has tall (about 3 ft high) grassy like stems growing that have little clusters on the ends that look like I remember hay in the fields when I was a child. What are they? Should I cut them off? Otherwise, the plant is healthy and blooming beautifully. My other question--my sister brought me an asiaitic lily (I don't think I spelled that one right)--is it okay outside; does it need anything special; do I need to do anything to keep it blooming? Thanks very much!

Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  Are you sure the grassy stems aren't unopened blooms of the Stella d'oro?  If not, it's probably just a grassy weed growing along witht the plant.  Wait a bit and see what it does.  If it doesn't bloom, pull it up.  Asiatic lilies are hardy to zone 3 or 4 so unless you live in the Northwest Territories of Canada, your Asiatics are probably okay.  I hope this helps.

All the blooms have fallen off the Asiatic lily--do I need to snip off the stems where they were or will it bloom again without me doing that? The grassy stems on the Stella d'oro aren't like anything I've ever seen on it before--maybe it is just a weed! Thanks!

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for the followup.  After the blooms fall off of the Asiatic lily you can snip off the spent blooms but don't cut off the leaves.  The plant will continue to lose the leaves to gather sunlight to make sugars to store in the bulb for food for nexzt year's blooms.  I hope this helps.
Tom
