Stella Day Lily

Question
I have had Stella de oro day lilies for about three years now. They were in full bloom evey year except last year. They hardly had any flowers just pods, I thought about digging them out and replacing them with new ones. They are in full sun all day long. Wondering what your advise would be if there is something I can try instead of digging them out and replacing them. Thank You. Susan

Answer
Hi Susan,
Thanx for your question.  About every three years, you need to dig up your plants and separate them.  They tend to get crowded after about 3 years and will slow down or even stop blooming.  The pods you describe were probably just the seed pods that formed after the sparse blooming.  If you will remove the dead flowers and prevent seed pods from forming, the plant will often bloom vigorously because a lot of energy is put into seed making.  I hope this helps.
Tom
