stella doro lillies

Question
Hi, I have had stella d'oro lillies for the past few years. They have usually rebloomed throughout the length of the summer and have been very full, with exception of the last 2 years.  I am getting these hard seed pods and then they just seem to stop blooming and thin out.  Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem may be and what I can do to ecourage blooming.  I am from Northeastern Pa (Wilkes- Barre/Scranton)

Answer
Hi Dina,
Thanx for your question.  First, if the stellas have been in the same place for many years, it's definately time to dig them up and thin them out.  If there are too many growing together this will cut back on their blooming.  Also, the hard seed pods will contribute to the plant not blooming because the plant is using all of its energy to produce seeds.  When your stellas have finished blooming, remove the spent flower and this will prevent the development of seeds and allow the plant to continue to bloom.  I hope this helps.
Tom
