Stella doro

Question
I planted Stella's about 6 years ago in my front and back to line the flower beds.  They have done extremely well, except this year.  The ones in the front are blooming like crazy, but the back doesn't even have a bud.  I live in East Texas - about 60 miles ne of Dallas.
THey get plenty of natural fertilizer, as we water from the lake.  Both beds get the same amount of sunlight, etc.  I'm thinking I may need to divide the ones in back.

Please advise - and if this is the case, when is the best time.

Thanks,
Rhonda

Answer
Hi Rhonda,
Thank you for your question.  I'm inclined to agree with you.  Usually, when lilies or iris slow down or stop blooming, it's because they've become too crowded.  As a general rule, try to thin them out every 3-4 years.  Be careful with fertilizer.  Too much nitrogen can cause all green, leafy growth at the expense of flowers.  Because you are watering the whole bed with the lake water, I don't think it's nitrogen.  Anyway, you can wait until fall or go ahead and divide now.  I would divide in the morning when it is still cool.  Drench them with water and they should be fine.  They're pretty tough.  I hope this helps.
Tom
