lackluster perennials

Question
QUESTION: Last year I planted happy return daylillies that thrived but hardly no bloom this year. I live in southern NJ. My questions are what do I do with the pods that have sprouted? Do they get removed for further flowering and when can is the best time and how do I divide them for future sites?

ANSWER: Hi Janet,
Thanx for your question.  The pods you speak of are seed pods and they need to be removed because they take too much energy from the plant.  This will also help encourage the plant to have a second, smaller flush of blooming in the late summer and early fall.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: How do i separate for further plantings. Do you just divide with a spade down to the roots? Also when is the best time of year to do this?

Answer
Hi Janet,
Thanx for the followup.  I use a pitch fork to dig up my lilies and separate.  Usually, when you dig up a clump, shake off the dirt, you can literally pull the separate plants apart (do it gently) and you can see where they are separate plants.  Dig gently around the plants and lift up the entire rootball down about 8 inches deep should suffice, then crumble off the soil and you find the root mass and then start separating the individual plants.  This is a perfect time of year to do it.  I hope this helps.
