Daylily Stella de Oro

Question
Can I use the pod which appears on the plant after it blooms to start new plants in other planting spaces?  If so how is it done?

Answer
Hi Martin,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, you can use the seeds from the seed pod of the Stella de Oro but wait until the pods turn brown and ripen.  They will start to split open and you can see the black seeds inside.  Bear in mind that because Stella de Oro is a hybrid, the seeds will not produce plants that directly resemble the Stella de Oro and most likely will revert back to prior generations of parentage.  With that said, you can place the seeds in a damp paper towel and put them inside a plastic baggie and leave them in the fridge for about a month.  After that, plant them about 1/4 inch deep in a pot of regular potting soil moist but not soggy.  They'll germinate in a couple of weeks and look like grass.  I wouldn't start any seed until January.  You'll have to harden the seedlings off too by placing them outdoors in the shade and sheltered from the weather for about ten days.  They usually start growing pretty quickly once they're in their permanent home and they should bloom the following year.  I hope this helps.
Tom
