stella de oro daylilies

Question
two seasons ago I divided my plants because they were getting too big and blooming very little.  Prior to this they had been nonstop bloomers. Since dividing them and placing them in the same beds, they've been very sparse, droopy, and have had little to no blooming. What can I do?  Thought maybe they needed more time to recover, but this year was no better than last year.

Answer
Hi Rebecca,
Thanx for your question.  Usually, day lilies just need one season to recover from dividing but sometimes it can take two years.  Make sure you fertilize them with a fertilizer lower in Nitrogen(N) than in Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K).  Too much nitrogen causes too much green growth and little or no flowering.  You need the extra phosporus and potassium to build up the plants rhizomes and roots and get your blooming going on.  Make sure the plants are growing where they're going to get 6-8 hours of full sunlight.  Although daylilies do splendidly even if it is very hot and dry, a regular soaking, once a week works wonders.  I hope this helps.
Tom
