when to plant wisteria

Question
I live in Tennessee and am going to plant one or two plants next to a post of my pergola. I want it to go up a attached ladder and spread over the top so as to provide shade in summer. When is the best time and procedure to plant it.
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Brad,
Thanx for your question.  Here is a site I think you will find helpful.

The main thing about wisteria is that you must control its growth or it will quickly become unwieldly and take over whatever is next to it whether it be a tree, buildings, pergola, fence.  Consistent and many times severe pruning are required to keep this vigorous vine in check.  Also, the pruning will help promote blooming.  Rampant vegetative growth will prevent and/or reduce blooming.  I hope this helps.
Tom
