daylilly blooms

Question
I have had daylillies for 20 years. This year the scapes on some of them are very short, and the flowers actually bloom down in the plant. I started noticing this on some of my plants last year. Help!

Answer
Hi Faye,
Thanx for your question.  Daylilies should be divided every three years.  If they become overcrowded they will reduce blooming and growth.  Has the area in which the daylilies are growing become more and more shaded over the years and you just haven't noticed?  This could cause the problem you are describing.  Other than that, I really don't know.  Here is a link to the American Hemerocallis Society, the people who ARE the daylily experts.  Perhaps someone there can better answer your question.

I hope this helps.
Tom
