Crape Myrtles (yellowing leaves)

Question
My crape myrtle leaves have started to get yellow.  There are still green leaves, but many are yellow.  Does this have to do with the amount we water?

Answer
Hi Bev,
Thanx for your question.  Has it been raining a lot and does the soil drain well?  "Wet feet" can cause leaf yellowing but then again, so can prolonged periods of dryness.  Another cause is lawn chemicals leaching into the soil where you have flowering trees and shrubs.  Lawn fertilizers generally are heavy on nitrogen and this can cause leaf burn.  If it's just a water issue such as you've had more rain than normal, the crape myrtle will recover.  It it's too dry, give it a good soaking once a week until it starts raining regularly.  If it's lawn chemicals try to avoid getting too much lawn fertilizer close to your flowering trees and shrubs.  I hope this helps.
Tom
