book on orchid care

Question
Hi Jim,  I am new to the world of orchids.  I purchased four orchids last September from a very reputable shop but am clueless about their care.  I think I have killed the Dendro with too much care.  The stalks are all dried out, and appear dead, no growth but there are white roots.  How do I know when to declare this orchid as hopelessly beyond repair?  Also, could you suggest a good book to purchase about orchid care?  Thanks for your help, I certainly need it!

Answer
Hi Gina,

There are lots of good orchid books around, some better than others.  But a good starter book is one published by Ortho Books "All About Orchids" for about $15.00.  It should be available at most book stores and garden centers selling orchids.  It is 8 1/2 by 11 inches and about a quarter inch thick but packs a lot of information covering the most commonly grown orchids.

That dendrobium might be one of the deciduous types that will drop their leaves in the fall or early winter.  If the growths (canes) have not gone limp or turned brown, I'd suggest leaving it alone for now, not even watering it other than a light watering once a month or so until you see new growth activity.  If nothing happens by May, it probably is a goner.

Lastly, most orchids are killed by kindness where people feel a need to keep them constantly watered and fed.  Most orchids are pretty hardy and can take some abuse.

Hope this helped.
