Maxine, in general, most types of orchids should be repotted in an orchid potting mix commercially available at stores selling orchids.  In the process of repotting, rinse off the roots and remove any that are mushy as these are dead.

In the case of phalaenopsis, attention should be given to the old flower spike.  If the flower spike remains green, you may cut it just above a node (joint). In some instances, a branch of the flower spike may be initiated at the node and that branch may flower.
