Soil compacted?

Question
Hello,

I have a diffenbachia (sp?) that has been in an 8 inch pot for a few years now, and I believe the soil is compacted.  I'd explain all the details to you, but I think you probably know what I mean.  My question is, should I use one of those fancy aerator thingies that I have seen in stores, or should I repot it with fresh soil?

Thanks for your help,
Mimi

Answer
Hi Mimi,

I know what compacted soil is, but what many folks identify as compacted soil is often not a problem.

Is the Dieffenbachia exhibiting some signs of deterioration? If so, please describe those symptoms. If not, then there is no problem and you should neither aerate the soil nor repot it.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
