Soil critters

Question
I have a orange tree in my home.  The soil was soil that I purchased at a store.  Today when I was cleaning up the leaves that had fallen on the top soil.  I found a worm of some kind-it was like a dark deep red color and looked as if it had things coming out from the sides sort of like a cenipede.  How do I get rid of them other then have to transplant the tree. The tree was out in a pot in the yard during the summer

Answer
Hi Helene,

One of the disadvantages of putting plants outside is that it exposes them to a variety of local critters. Most of these critters, including those you have described, are harmless to the plant. However, I do understand you are not eager to have them in your home!

There are systemic pesticides available that you add to the soil that are generally effective. However, they are toxic and I don't recommended them.

As an alternative, you can plunge the pot up to its rim in plain water and leave it for about 30 minutes. This will force the pests up and out in search of air.

Good luck and please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
