erica heathers

Question
I recieved an erica heather for my birthday this year, and decided to keep it as a houseplant instead of planting it outside.  I just don't know that much about them other than the soil conditions that they require.  How do you prune them and when is the best time to do this.  Some of the pink flowers have started to turn white and fall off with the lights touch.  How can I save her?

Answer
Heathers can bloom several times a year if the growing conditions are right. Now that the flowers are spent, give your plant a haircut, pruning just below where the flower spike begins. This will promote new growth and the heather should bloom again in 3-4 months. Heathers thrive outdoors in full sunshine, in average, well draining soil. Give your plant lots of bright light and water when the top inch of soil seems dry.

Best wishes with your heather!
