indoor azela plant

Question
i got an azela plant. for valentines day. can i repot and keep  inside? does it need a certian potting soil or fertilizer? any info would be appreciated. thanks

Answer
Janie,

NO! You should not repot it until it is done blooming and not until after April 1st when the days are longer. You can keep it indoors but make sure it is getting bright light. When you water it give it enough water that all the water in the pot is moist and some water goes in the drain tray under the pot. Then 30 minutes later empty the drain tray so the plant is not sitting in a tray full of water or the roots will soon start rotting and the plant will die.

When you can repot move it to a pot that has a diameter 2 inches larger than the diameter of the pot it is in now. Use potting soil mixed with peat moss (the kind that comes in the square bales). Mix 1 part potting soil with 1 part peat moss. The peat moss will make the soil more acidic which is what azaleas need.

If the plant goes outdoors during the summer it must stay in a bright but shady location. Fertilize once a month with Miracid. Good luck.
