Indoor Tropical Plant

Question
I bought an indoor tropical plant about a week ago. At first it seemed to be in perfect health, I repotted it in a slightly larger pot with adequate drainage, added a little fertilizer, don't think I water it too much, maybe once or twice since I had it. I placed it close to a large window to make sure it gets enough light, but i try to provide shade from direct sunlight. At any rate, it's winter and the sun rays are not very strong yet. But despite all this, I noticed a couple of leaves starting to turn yellow already, and brown spots appearing on the tips of some of the leaves. What am I doing wrong?

Answer
Hi J J..yellow leaves is over watering, brown tips are not enough humidity (dry indoor heat will do this); back off on the watering and mist the leaves frequently, this should take care of the problem. You didn't mention if it is still in the nursery container it came in, if so, you should change it out, this was never meant to be its permanent home. When you repot it, make sure you line the bottom with some drainage medium, so the roots don't sit in the water, and only water when the soil is dry to touch, your initial watering after transplanting it should be a good soaking to settle an air pockets, you will know it when the water runs out the drainage holes, then as I said, back off until it shows dryness..regards Nick
