Yucca Cane Plant Troubles

Question
Hello Darlene,
I have 2 Yucca Cane Plants.  Both of them are approximately 5' tall.  They have not been repotted in approximately 2 years. The pot size is approximately 20"x20" x 18" deep. I have had them in the house in an area where they receive indirect sunlight...very diffused sunlight I should say.  I recently moved them outdoors on my back deck as they were looking really washed of color.  I thought that more sunlight and thorough watering may be needed.  I live in zone 6b area.  At this time the plants leaves are an extremely light (faded) green...the thin 'stalk' is almost a parchment color...white looking.  The trunk looks healthy though.  I even have one shoot coming off the side of one of the plants.  I am now wondering if I should get it back inside as the nights can be a little cool here.  What are your thoughts and recommendations?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hope,

Unless the night temperatures are below 50 degrees keep them outside in full sun. If it is going to drop below 50 one night you can pull them in the garage and put them back out the next day when the temps are above 50 degrees. Cut back on the watering outdoors, do not water them until the soil is pretty dry. Yuccas are desert plants and need to dry out somewhat between watering, they cannot be constantly moist.

The size pot they are in is huge. You should NEVER need to repot them and they will grow to over 8' tall easily in that size pot. When you move them indoors in the fall you need to put them in a sunny location, not in diffused light. They need as much sun as possible in front of an east, west or south window or french door that has blinds open from dawn to dusk. Then the plants will continue to grow year around. These can be beautiful green healthy plants year around if given the proper light. I know because I have one. Enjoy your yuccas. Good luck.

Darlene
