Norfolk Pine plant

Question
Received one as a Christmas gift. General instruction came with, thoroughly water when dry to touch .  Diffused sunlight, not direct light.  Question 1) How tall/large do these usually get.  2) For indoor only?

Answer
Peggy,

Do not allow this tree to sit in a tray full of water as it's roots will rot easily. In a pot the tree will get as large as it is allowed to up to 10-12 feet. If you repot it every year into a larger pot it will just keep growing. In a tropical area when planted in the ground it will get 80-100 feet tall, as large as an old maple tree or walnut. To keep it from getting out of hand you can treat it similar to a bonsai tree. When it gets to 2/3rds of the size you want it to be stop repotting it. It should not  be in a pot with a diameter of more than 14 inches. Then every 3  years you can take it out of it's pot and cut approximately 2 inches of roots and soil off the outside of the root ball with a sharp knife or  machete. Then clean it's pot and put it back in the same pot with fresh soil around it. This is not as difficult as it sounds and it is very good for the tree. By doing this you are giving the roots room to grow without outgrowing the pot.

Then to slow the growth of the top of the tree you can keep it pinched back. When you start seeing the light green new growth in the spring of the year you can use your fingers and pinch off half to 2/3rds of the new green growth before it starts turning dark green and getting slightly stiffer like the mature foliage. By doing this you are limiting it's growth so it does not outgrow your home too fast.

Without doing this you will need to plan to move to Florida, southern California, Arizona or south Texas and plant the tree in the ground in about 10 years when it is outgrowing your home. It will need to be moved in a semi and only during the summer months so it doesn't freeze during transit.

Keep the tree in a bright room but not next to a window. Good luck!!!
