Watering plants causes snap, crackle, pop noise.

Question
Dear Mr. Creed:

Sometimes, my houseplants make the same, snap, crackle, pop, sounds that you would expect to hear from a bowl of Rice Krispies.  This does not seem related to soil type, since I have heard it from plants potted in Miracle Gro regular potting soil, as well as plants potted in the special soils designed for African violets and succulents.

What causes this to happen?

Answer
Why did you plant your houseplants in Rice Krispies?! Just kidding.

Most good potting mixes contain porous material such as perlite and vermiculite that will make a slight popping sound as they absorb water (just like porous Rice Krispies), particularly if the soil is very dry when watered. You can also usually see some tiny bubbles percolating on the soil surface of porous potting mixes after watering.

I cannot think of any other explanation for this phenomenon unless there is something very strange about the quality of the water you are using.
