Watering

Question
I've killed every plant I've ever owned - even cacti.  I got two plants - a snake plant and a basket of mixed low-light indoor plants.  The tag tells how often to water - but how much?  Do you water till it runs out the bottom?  Till it runs out the top? I need a better way to tell how much.

Answer
John,

Every plant must be in a pot with one or more drain holes in the bottom of the pot and a drain tray under it. Yes, give it enough water until water till runs out the bottom then an hour later empty that drain tray. If you don't want to pick the plants up to do this you can use a turkey baster to suction the excess water out and back into a bucket. That water can be reused. That will insure that your plants are not sitting in water and their roots are not rotting but that they also have adequate water. They are not swamp plants and their roots will rot if they are forced to sit in water constantly. Then allow them to dry out until they feel measurably lighter when picked up. They should be dry for 3-4 days after the surface of the soil is dry. The snake plant should be dryer than the others before watering. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck!
