fungas

Question
All of my plants have a white "film" over top of the soil.  It looks like a white mold.  I don't see it on all the plants leaves but it is on my Moses in the bullrushes.....I don't know the techinal name.  I am not sure what it is. It is even in the roots of my plant that is being rooted in just water.  I don't know where they got it from.  I got a plant for Christmas and then I watered them all with a little mircale grow and boom they all had it even the three plants that were clear.  I hope you can help.

Thanks, Cheryl

Answer
Hi Cheryl,

A white film on soil is almost always a type of fungus or mold. It is generally harmless to your plants. However, it is indicative of soil that is contaminated with fungus spores and perhaps other contaminants, as well. For potted indoor plants it is best to use a peat-based soilless potting mix. Garden soil and compost are particularly prone to fungus growth.

You can try to scrape off and discard the mold and the surface soil. Avoid using fertilizer and allow the top inch or so of soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
